When students arrive back on campus they will be pleasantly surprised by what they see. GLY Construction has been hard at work on the Cardinal Union Building – the future Middle School Building which will open in the Fall of 2018. The major construction activities that took place this summer were the start of our “phase 2” concrete foundation work and the structural elements that support the building.

The “phase 1” foundation work on the east side of the site started earlier this spring with the demolition of the old CUB Building. After the “phase 1” foundation work was complete, the level 1 post-tensioned concrete slabs were formed and poured for the gym and eastern half of the classroom building. The timing of the demolition of the Cardinal Union Building in March and early placement of the level 1 concrete slabs allowed GLY Construction to flow directly into the anticipated “phase 2” foundation work following the Berkey house’s demolition in July. By the end of August, GLY will have completed all of the foundation work on the project.
Beginning in September, the second concrete floor of the future classroom building will be complete, bringing the project level to E Union Street and kicking off the start of the superstructure (structural building elements that are above ground level). This will include elevated concrete post-tensioned slabs on the north end of the building which will house classrooms as well as a steel-framed structure for the double height gymnasium on the south end.
While all this work has been going on outside, significant changes were made inside many classrooms as well, particularly in the STREAM Building and the Foreign Language classrooms. Our Technology Department was hard at work this summer installing seven ClearTouch interactive panels and soundbars in the STREAM classrooms. This meant that the SmartBoards and projectors from the STREAM could be repurposed and installed in the Foreign Language classes of the Middle School Building. There were also SmartBoards and projectors installed in a couple of rooms in the Vanderbilt Building (which received a major overhaul last summer).
We look forward to the return of students next week and a wonderful 2017-18 school year!Share
